Have you ever looked at that mystery substance in the back of your garage and wondered if it would be okay to just flush it down the drain? Or worse, are you worried about what would happen if your kid found it and wanted to drink it?
On this episode of On The House: Household Management Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra is joined by David Speller. He has been with Sustainability Victoria since 2012, initially running the agency’s ResourceSmart Schools program, which helps Victorian schools embed sustainability in everything they do. Sit tight as David explains how to store toxic household items and how you should dispose of these dangerous substances. He also shares unexpectedly toxic household items, their alternatives, and what you should do if you, your children, or your pets accidentally consume something they shouldn’t.

There's nothing worse than digging around to find the right spatula while your sauce burns on the stove. The right kitchen equipment and keeping it organized will not only make your life easier, but it will also enhance your cooking! For this episode of On The House: Household Management Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra is joined by Sharon Franke, a journalist and product tester that specializes in kitchen equipment. Before her current career, she worked at the Good Housekeeping Institute for 30 years. There she served as Director of the Kitchen Appliances Lab—responsible for overseeing the testing and editorial coverage of everything related to cooking appliances and equipment. Here, Sharon shares her practices on how to arrange kitchen equipment, how she utilizes the mise en place theory for her appliances, and some tips and tricks on managing kitchen equipment. Between work, kids, keeping active, and (occasional) socializing, who has time to be at home to accept a package? Or sit around at home waiting for the plumber to finally show up?
On this episode of On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella is joined by Louise Dunham, the CEO of Placement Solutions, Just Family Payroll Pty. Ltd., and Nurture Training College. Louisa had the great honor of being on the APNA awards committee and giving Barbara Kline of White House Nannies in Washington, DC, the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, Louise won two prestigious awards from the Association of Premier Nanny Agencies, based in the United States. The first award was for leadership, presented to Louise for her 31 years of leading the industry and encouraging them to do better. The second was for Excellence as an Agency. This honor is particularly noted because it is the first time 2 awards have been won by one Agency in the same year, and it is the first time the award has been presented to a non-American Agency. In 2017, Louise published a book called The State Of The Nanny, a definitive look at this sector of the childcare industry. Louise was VP of the INA (International Nanny Association based in America). She chaired the Ethics Committee from 2012 until early 2017 and was the first non-American on the board. Gabriella starts this conversation by getting to know Louise’s favorite food and a recent book she has read before talking about the division of housework and how household managers can help in any home.
Gabriella and Louise also discuss three good things about dividing housework practices so that everyone can organize their homes well.
