The air we breathe has more of an impact on our health and well-being than you might think. In this episode of On the House, host Marie Stella is joined by construction management lecturer Mary Myla Andamon to explore practical ways to improve the quality of air at home.
Prior to joining RMIT University as a lecturer, Mary Myla Andamon served as project coordinator and sustainability researcher in an Adelaide- and Sydney-based architectural practice specializing in shopping center planning and design, as well as commercial retail architecture. Currently, she is working on a number of research projects based on monitoring and evaluating indoor environmental quality, building thermal performance and energy efficiency and assessment of urban microclimates.
In this episode, Mary Myla Andamon sheds light on the various factors that affect air circulation, and why it is so important to ensure sufficient ventilation at home. She elaborates on basic, easy-to-practice habits that contribute massively to air circulation, from using the kitchen rangehood when cooking, to switching on the bathroom exhaust fan at least a few minutes before each shower.

At present, millions of people still face hunger and malnutrition, while the effects of climate change threaten agricultural productivity, and so, food security remains an urgent concern. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella speaks to research scientist Graham Lyons to learn more about the threats we face in food security, and what we can do about it from our homes.
Based in South Australia, Graham Lyons also serves as the international agriculture and human health program manager at the University of Adelaide. His career in agriculture took root in family farms that he managed until 1997. Graham Lyons then went on to study public health, and completed a PhD on selenium in wheat and humans in 2004. Since then, he has worked across the globe, from China and Tibet, to East Africa and Colombia.
In this episode, Graham Lyons starts out by describing food security as the provision of adequate food and nutrition into the foreseeable future. He then cites a decline in fertility from the 1930s onwards as an indicator of food insecurity taking place, combined with other factors.
Together, Marie and Graham Lyons weigh up various facets of gardening sustainability at home, from mulching, integrating pest-management plants, and inorganic fertilizers, to composting and kitchen waste. According to an United Nations food index report, an alarming 33% of all food produced winds up being lost or wasted, costing the global economy close to a trillion dollars each year. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra is joined by Aakanksha Bhatia to learn more about cutting our losses by transforming food trash into treasure.
A doctoral scholar in the Indian Institute of Technology’s Department of Management Studies, Aakanksha Bhatia’s work is largely associated with food security concerns in developing economies, including food waste and food security index. Food waste lurking in your bins? You’re not alone. This week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra chats with Claire Kneller, the general manager for Leading Harvest in Australia, to unpack the multifaceted landscape of food waste, from wilted lettuce and forgotten leftovers to planning and shopping for meal planning.
Claire is the General Manager for Leading Harvest in Australia, a global certification standard for regenerative agriculture. Previously, Claire was the Managing Director of WRAP Asia Pacific, a not for profit focussed on the transition to a circular economy, especially for food, clothing and plastic packaging. Based in Australia, Claire develops and implements programmes across WRAP’s focus areas, and on top of that, works with End Food Waste Australia leading the delivery of Australia’s halving food waste target.
In this episode, Claire Kneller discusses the major contributors to food waste and what can be done to reduce it, revealing that the target to reduce food waste is 50% by 2030. She shares more on what makes this a realistic goal, and what we need to do to achieve this collectively.
